The BetterPoints pilot is coming to Skelmersdale.

NHS West Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) will deliver the ‘BetterPoints’ app, which will help to motivate, track and reward people for undertaking activities (such as walking, or attending health or wellbeing-oriented events).

It is hoped the app will help change the lifestyles of hundreds of people in Skelmersdale – parts of which are among the most disadvantaged areas of the country.

The app works by encouraging residents to make small lifestyle changes. These changes are logged and residents earn points for use in the local community or choose to use them to make charitable donations.

The Skelmersdale project will share in £388,000 from the Innovation Agency, which is the Academic Health Science Network for the North West Coast. It covers Cheshire, Merseyside, South Cumbria and Lancashire, serving a population of around four million residents.

NHS West Lancashire CCG chief officer Mike Maguire, said: “Most of Skelmersdale is within the top five per cent of the most deprived areas in the nation and we are trying to improve the health of our population.

“The funding from the Innovation Agency will provide a simple way to help people adopt healthier lifestyles.

A spokeswoman for the Innovation Agency commented: “Skelmersdale is a deprived area, it was essential that they were granted the funding to help improve the health of people and Innovation Agency provided that funding.

“This is part of a wider initiative to improve the health of the 40,000 population.”

Dr Liz Mear, chief executive of the Innovation Agency, said: “We’re delighted to support this project which will not only benefit patients now, but create a lasting health legacy for the next generation.”

“They are one of 15 Academic Health Science Networks, set up by NHS England to accelerate the spread of innovation, improve the health of local communities and generate economic growth.
