GP extended access resumes in West Lancashire

RESIDENTS in West Lancashire are advised that the GP extended access service has now resumed.

Launched in 2016, the extended access service makes accessing primary care easier by making appointments available in the evenings and weekends. The service was temporarily halted at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. It has however now resumed and is available seven days a week across West Lancashire.

Making an appointment to see a GP in the evening and at weekends is as simple as calling your local GP practice and making an appointment through the reception as you would do normally, patients can choose which practice they visit from those that are offering this service when making their appointment.

Details as to which practices are offering the service are below, you do not need to be registered with these practices to access the extended access service, when you contact your GP practice, they can book you into your nearest alternative practice.

Monday 6.30pm – 8pm Sandy Lane
Tuesday 6.30pm – 8pm Burscough Health Centre
Wednesday 6.30pm – 8pm Ormskirk Medical Practice
Thursday 6.30pm – 8pm Burscough Health Centre
Friday 6.30pm – 8pm Sandy Lane
Saturday 9am – 1pm Sandy Lane, Ormskirk Medical Practice and Burscough Health Centre
Sunday 9am – 1pm Sandy Lane, Ormskirk Medical Practice and Burscough Health Centre

Patients can access many of the services that they would do usually from new and existing problems, routine GP checkups and blood tests.

To keep staff and patients safe from COVID-19, patients will need to book in advance of attending, all clinicians will be wearing full PPE and there is allocated time between each appointment to enable cleaning between appointments.

Dr Peter Gregory, local GP and chair at NHS West Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), said: “It’s really important that local residents can access a GP at a time that is convenient for them. The extended access service means that they can access a GP in the evening and weekends, at a time more convenient for them.

“To make an appointment simply contact your GP practice as you would do normally. We have three practices offering extended access in West Lancs, one in each neighbourhood, but as long as you are registered with a GP in West Lancashire, you can access this service.”

If residents are not currently registered with a GP, you can find out where your local GP surgery is at or by calling 0300 311 22 33.
