B12 Injections during COVID-19 Pandemic

NHS West Lancashire CCG GP practices have temporarily GP stopped B12 top up injections to protect to protect patients and frontline staff from unnecessary contact and to help keep essential services going.

We recommend patients who normally receive an injection take high dose B12 tablets 1mg (1000mcg) a day. High dose B12 is absorbed into the body to help correct the deficiency, even in patients with pernicious anaemia, as some oral B12 is still absorbed.

High dose 1mg B12 tablets can be purchased at some pharmacies, health food shops, Holland and Barrett (at the Ormskirk branch and online) and on Amazon.

The CCG is urgently looking at ways to restore services in GP practices, with appropriate social distancing measures to protect both staff and patients. Pernicious anaemia patients with any concerns about their condition should arrange a telephone consultation with their GP.
