See a GP in the evening and weekend with the Extended Access scheme

LOCAL residents are being reminded that they can access a local GP in the evening and at the weekend with the Extended Access scheme.

NHS West Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is reminding residents that the Extended Access scheme operates seven days a week, 365 days a year, including bank holidays. This includes Christmas Day (Wednesday 25 December 2019), Boxing Day (Thursday 26 December 2019) and New Years’ Day (Wednesday 1 January 2020).

This service is offered at GP practices across West Lancashire. To book an evening or weekend appointment simply call your GP practice and make an appointment as you would do normally.

Dr John Caine, a local GP and chair at NHS West Lancashire CCG, said: “We know from listening to our local population that accessing a GP was proving increasingly difficult for patients.  The Extended Access scheme was introduced to reflect the needs of patients in today’s society, by not only increasing the availability of GP appointments, but also making these appointments available later in the evening and at the weekend.

“Visiting a GP during typical working hours isn’t always possible, due to work or other commitments, so the Extended Access scheme allows patients to visit a GP up to 8pm on weekday evenings and from 9am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. Weekend times can vary during the year, so please check with your practice.

“When you make an appointment with the Extended Access scheme you may be offered an appointment at your local GP surgery, another local GP surgery, or another local NHS service.”
