A fitness programme which helps people living with and beyond cancer become more active has been launched in West Lancashire.
“Move More” helps people with a diagnosis of cancer to find effective ways to stay active, no matter where they are on their cancer journey, including those who have since completed treatment.
It is a joint initiative between Macmillan Cancer Support, Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust and NHS West Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).
Jen Burns, Macmillan project manager West Lancashire, said: “Being more physically active can help people with cancer cope with and recover from the effects of cancer and its treatment.
“Move More offers individually tailored activity programmes and sets personal goals which have a lasting impact on well-being.”
People can work on their fitness individually or in a group setting. Classes take place on Monday and Fridays in the physiotherapy department at Ormskirk hospital at 1.15pm and 2.45pm.
Move More is run by Melanie Reardon, Macmillan physical activity manager, with Tim Horn, Macmillan physical activity physiotherapist and Ann Prescott, Macmillan physical activity assistant practitioner.
Tim said: “We’ve had a really good response. By improving fitness people can also improve levels of independence and gain confidence too.”
People taking part in the sessions said: “Move More has been invaluable in improving my confidence and I generally feel much happier. My fitness levels have improved greatly and I find I can do much more around the house and walk further when I am out. The sessions are well planned and take individual circumstances into account so everyone feels they are getting the best out of the exercises.”
Another commented: “The camaraderie between members of the group and staff has been important to share experiences and encourage each other. Move More has given me increased confidence and a better quality of life.”
