Examine your options: can you spread the message?

The local NHS in West Lancashire is encouraging people to think about which health service is most suitable for their injury or illness.

Examine Your Options reminds residents that dialling 999 or visiting A&E is for serious injuries and illnesses only and using these services unnecessarily can divert attention from genuine medical emergencies.

To spread this message; NHS West Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has free posters and leaflets available for local businesses, schools, libraries, charities and other similar groups to display. Free Examine Your Options folding credit-card-sized leaflets are available in handy dispensers which are ideal for waiting room tables and reception desks.

Dr John Caine, local GP and NHS West Lancashire CCG chair, said: “With hospitals across the country facing extremely heavy demand this winter, we’re encouraging people to think carefully about the options that are available to them.

“It’s essential to remember that emergency departments should only be used for serious illnesses and injuries and not as an alternative to your GP. These handy leaflets – which can fit in your wallet or be displayed on a wall as a poster– offer really useful advice and I would encourage all local business and groups to help spread this vital message.”
