Stub it out with Stoptober

West Lancashire above national average for number of smokers with more than 30,000 people in West Lancashire smoke.

NHS West Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is urging people to make the most of the latest stop smoking campaign Stoptober by signing up today.

Hundreds of people across West Lancashire have now signed up to take part in Public Health England’s Stoptober – the mass 28-day stop smoking challenge, which anyone can join during October.

Smoking remains the area’s biggest killer, with half of the estimated 31,000 long-term smokers in West Lancashire expected to die prematurely from a smoking-related disease.   Figures show the number of smokers in West Lancashire (28% of the population) is higher than the UK average (20%), and compared to Sweden (the best in Europe at 14%) is even higher.

Dr Jack Kinsey, a GP on the board of healthcare commissioners NHS West Lancashire CCG, said:

“There are endless statistics and clinical evidence out there to suggest smoking is extremely bad for our long-term health.  Yet we are still surrounded by thousands of people lured into the habit who then struggle to give up.  And what’s worse, lung cancer is particularly rising in women.  Public health officials, clinicians, the government and other influential partners need to work together need to act now to help combat this increasing issue.”

It is not too late to sign up!   Stoptober is designed for anyone who smokes and there is support throughout the month. The support includes the 28-day Stoptober App and text support which provide daily updates and quitting advice, detailed tools and tips for coping, as well as the encouragement and support from thousands of people all quitting together.

Dr Kinsey continues:

“We recognise that several people who smoke really do want to give up so Stoptober provides that perfect chance to stop but with plenty of support.   There are so many health benefits that will come with giving up, not just for you but your family too.  Good luck to everyone signed up and we encourage anyone else thinking about it to just sign up and see how it goes.”
